14 Must-Know Tips Before Flying Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines… sigh or scream? You decide.

People often joke that Frontier is like the Greyhound bus of the skies—and honestly, that’s a bit harsh on Greyhound. Flying with Frontier can be a rollercoaster, and yes, I’ve exited their planes more than once swearing “never again.”

Yet, here I am. Booking another flight.

While I dream of Delta lounges and spacious American Airlines cabins, those sub-$100 roundtrip deals Frontier offers from my local airport are just too tempting. So, rather than shell out more or drive to a further airport, I often end up on a ULCC like Spirit or Frontier.

This post isn’t sponsored by Frontier. I paid for my ticket like any regular traveler. Some links below are affiliate links, which help keep this blog ad-free (thank you!).

1. Know Their Route Map

Frontier connects over 100 cities across the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean. It covers more destinations than many other low-cost carriers, so chances are it’s flying near you. Want to see if your city’s on the list? Check out their current route map.

Your instinct says to click the green button, right? Well, that’s going to cost you…

2. Booking Online? Be Cautious

Frontier’s site is filled with deceptive design patterns—they want you to click options that cost you more. For instance, you’ll be prompted to buy a seat even though it’s not required. See how it’s done here.

3. Backpack or Bust

To fly cheap, ditch the suitcase. Use a backpack that qualifies as a “personal item.” Frontier charges for anything more. That $60 saved? You’ll thank yourself later.

4. Know Your Dimensions

Frontier’s size limits: 8”D x 18”W x 14”H. That’s tight. TikTok is full of videos where passengers are forced to pay $99 for “oversized” personal items. Avoid that nightmare. Measure first. Here’s a smaller backup bag just in case.

5. Buy Bags Early

Add baggage when booking. Wait until the airport, and you’re paying nearly double. Be smart—pay $60 now instead of $99 later.

6. Compare Total Cost

After adding all the extras, is Frontier still cheaper than Delta or United? Sometimes not. Check the full price, not just the fare. It makes a huge difference.

7. Be Your Own Hero

Check in via the app, pack your own snacks, and bring a water bottle. Don’t pay for things you don’t need. Reusable water bottles are a travel must.

8. Seating Separates Friends

Unless you pay extra, expect to be split up from your travel partner—even if the flight’s half empty. This is common with ULCCs, so plan ahead or embrace the randomness.

9. Spot the Animal Tail

Every Frontier plane features a different animal. It’s kitschy but fun. My favorite? Rosie the River Otter. See the full animal list.

10. Expect Kids. Lots of Kids.

Frontier is family-friendly, which means the volume levels rise. Bring noise-canceling headphones and maybe some patience.

Seats are narrow, thin, and tightly packed. Prepare to get cozy… very cozy.

11. Comfort? Forget About It

The seats are hard, cramped, and don’t recline. If you have back issues or are tall, consider limiting your Frontier flights to under 3–4 hours.

12. Frontier is Often Late

Only about 63% of flights arrived on time in 2023. The national average? 76%. Plan accordingly.

13. You’re Just a Number

Customer support is minimal. Delays? Cancellations? You’re mostly on your own. Pack patience and a Plan B.

14. You’ll Fly Again Anyway

As much as we complain, those $75 roundtrips keep pulling us back. With expectations set properly, it’s not the worst option.

Conclusion

Flying with Frontier Airlines requires careful planning and a willingness to forego certain comforts. By understanding their policies and preparing accordingly, you can enjoy affordable travel to numerous destinations.
